Architects Without Borders

Architects Without Borders is a non-profit organization committed to promoting a sustainable and high-quality built environment, a healthy environment and social equality. We believe that architecture and a quality built environment should be accessible to everyone, and consider this a basic right. Architects Without Borders therefore offers advice and support for social or humanitarian initiatives that would otherwise not have access to high-quality architecture or spatial planning.

Our Goals:

  • Quality and sustainable design accessible to everyone.

  • Supporting humanitarian and social projects worldwide

  • Activating experts for global impact.

The nature of our involvement can vary from ad hoc or one-off advice to complete architectural assignments. We provide opportunities for young people and students to develop and grow in their field. If necessary, we expand our team with additional experts, such as for special technical studies. For international projects we look for suitable local partners.

Who we are:

Our team consists of dedicated architects, landscape architects and urban planners from Belgium and the Netherlands. These professionals voluntarily donate their working hours to the various projects. Do you want to be part of our team or do you have questions? Contact us .

Our History:

ASF-Be was founded in 1992. Since then, we have carried out projects in countries such as Ecuador, Romania, Mexico, Peru, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Burkina Faso. We have also supported reconstruction projects in Turkey, Sri Lanka and Thailand, as well as a research project on earthquake-resistant construction in Kashmir. In Belgium we have collaborated with organizations such as the Red Cross, OCMWs and SVKs for the reception of refugees and housing for the underprivileged.

We are currently actively working on projects in RD Congo, Madagascar and Sierra Leone. For the development of the surgical center in Beni, Congo, ASF-Be was nominated for the Belgian Building Awards.

International Network:

In 2007, ASF-Be took the initiative to establish ASF-Int, an international umbrella organization in Hasselt. This partnership between various ASF departments worldwide has now expanded into a network that is active in 33 countries.
